Why Occupational Therapy?

As parents we often find it hard to watch our children struggle to gain new skills. When your child is not meeting developmental milestones or is given a developmental or medical diagnosis at a young age it can lead to confusion about what steps you should take to provide your child with the greatest opportunity for success. Many families face difficulties with daily routines including difficulty calming for or staying asleep, participating in meal times, difficulty engaging in relationships within the family and in the community, trouble engaging in or maintaining attention to play and difficulty with age appropriate safety awareness.

Occupational therapists view occupations as activities that people participate in that are meaningful and necessary to move throughout their day. For children, primary occupations are play, self-care (including mealtimes, dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting and sleeping) and learning. When any of these occupations is difficult, it can take a toll on the child and family.
